CHEJ Reports |
As an organization and as part of a grassroots movement, we've been able to succeed because of our working principle of mutual aid and support. The American People's Dioxin Report and Behind Closed Doors reports are a perfect examples of how CHEJ and the movement it supports work. Many scientist, activists, leaders, and researchers contributed to these reports by writing, reviewing and helping to define its direction. We want to thank and acknowledge each and every contribution. American People's Dioxin Report The People Speak For over sixteen years, the American People have waited for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to finalize their report on dioxin and human health. The American public has waited for answers from this report so that steps could be taken to protect human health from dangerous exposures. After more than a decade, the American people could no longer wait for our silent government to act to safeguard the public's health. In January, 1999, more than fifty individuals came together to write policy recommendations for twelve dioxin sources. They participated, in person, and via phone, fax and e-mail, in twelve work groups. Each work group was responsible for drafting recommendations around a specific source for the whole group to consider. In April of 1999, twenty-four leaders came to Northern Virginia to participate in a Roundtable meeting to shape these recommendations. The results of this work is the America's Choice: Children's Health or Corporate Profit, American People's Dioxin Report. The report consists of two parts. The first is the Executive Summary that contains a summary of the newest scientific research findings on the health effects of dioxin and a set of policy recommendations developed the American people. The second portion of this report is the Technical Support Document (TSD), which provides a comprehensive report on the health effects of dioxin. A number of scientists contributed to the writing of the TSD, which provides the scientific basis for this report. This document was also peer reviewed by some of this country's leading experts on dioxin. America's
Choice: Children's Health or Corporate Profit, The Dioxin Report: The report,“Behind Closed Doors,”outlines specific cases where the Chlorine Chemistry Council has used their backdoor influence to roadblock the EPA process in releasing the Dioxin Reassessment. Their tactics include successfully lobbying to get industry-backed scientists seated on key peer-review panels, advocating reforms to limit public participation and stalling the release of EPA findings with lawsuits.
